Independent Money and Debt Advice

Newark and Sherwood Homes supports its customers to access free independent advice.  Below is information about organisations which you may wish to contact to help you in managing your money to clear your debts or supporting you to pay your rent and to sustain your home.

Sherwood and Newark Citizens Advice - provides free, independent and confidential advice about debt and money, benefits, housing, legal, discrimination, employment, immigration and consumer advice. You can access the services in different ways:

  • face-to-face
  • telephone
  • online
  • home visits  (for housebound residents and carers, by appointment)

We work closely with the SANCA and have set up services which are focused around accessing help to pay rent and sustaining your home. You can contact NASCA yourself or speak to us and we will arrange a referral for you.

Money Advice Service – is a free and impartial service, set up by the Government to help people make the most of their money. They give money advice to everyone across the UK – online, on webchat, over the phone, in printed guides and face to face. You may have seen their Ask Ma campaign.

  • How to manage your money using their budget planner
  • Money Health Check which provides a tailored plan with tips and help for you to maximise your income.

  • Money saving tips on everyday spending.

Directgov – A Government site with a range of guidance including: benefit entitlement, help with moving from benefits to work, access to search for, and find a job through Universal JobMatch.    Visit

National Debtline – A Government service providing free, confidential and independent advice on how to deal with debt problems in the UK. Information includes:

  • How to deal with debts by checking you are getting all the money you are entitled to
  • Working out a personal budget
  • Ways to manage your priority and non-priority debts

Turn2us– is a charity providing information about accessing welfare benefits, charitable grants, fuel poverty and other financial help – online, by phone and face to face through other partner organisations.  They also have a range of useful online tools to include: a benefits calculator to help check what benefits you might be able to claim and a grant finder.

Shelter – is a Housing and Homelessness charity which provides advice and support to manage money problems. Support available includes:

  • Money Crisis Support – loans and assistance
  • Budgeting Loans
  • Furniture Projects to find free or cheap furniture
  • Energy costs – help with heating costs and saving money on gas and electric
  • Rent Arrears advice and support
