photo (3)Maria Brambles has successfully completed the Rooftop of the World challenge, raising £4,800 for REALL, formerly known as Homeless International.

The challenge took place from 13th to 23rd November, and saw Maria, plus 34 others, trek through the Annapurna region of Nepal, to help with a construction project to build new shelters for homeless families.

Maria joined the LUMANTI Support Group for Shelter, which aids the Community Led Infrastructure Finance Facility (CLIFF) programme, an arrangement between the charity, bank and the local government to provide housing on loan to local members of the community.

Together, the team spent three days digging foundations for homes, with no mechanical aids, and have managed to raise a staggering £130,000 for REALL collectively.

Maria Brambles said: “The project was absolutely amazing. Everyone works so hard and it is so rewarding. I had such a great experience and I hope I can go back again in two years’ time, when the programme runs again.”

Before her departure, Maria undertook a gruelling training regime which saw her spend days in the Lake District, hiking up the steepest hills. Maria also held a wide variety of fundraisers to help her meet her required target of £3,500, and was determined to raise as much money as possible for the charity. She held raffles, bake sales, a bicycle auction, sweepstakes, an office tuck shop, and heavily promoted her Just Giving site, to help boost her impressive total.

Maria said: “I was a little bit worried at first wondering if I would be able to raise £3,500 for the trek, but it is not as daunting as it seems, especially with the support of my colleagues, friends and family. It was also fantastic to have the backing of Newark and Sherwood Homes, especially as this was a cause close to all our hearts.”

Stephen Feast, Director at Newark and Sherwood Homes, said: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to support Maria. We would like to congratulate her not just on completing the challenge – which is no mean feat, but on her hard work and dedication in exceeding her fundraising target.”

REALL is a social enterprise that is dedicated to improving housing conditions in informal settlements across the developing world. Formerly known as Homeless International, the charity has developed a unique approach to tackling the problem of slums.

Newark and Sherwood Homes is the Management Organisation that was set up by Newark and Sherwood District Council in 2004 to manage, maintain and improve council housing. The organisation manages approximately 5,500 homes on behalf of the Council and its aim is to deliver excellent housing services.
