NEWARK AND SHERWOOD DISTRICT COUNCIL AND NEWARK AND SHERWOOD HOMES SET OUT A LONG TERM FUTURE TO BENEFIT TENANTS AND THE COMMUNITY

Newark and Sherwood District Council has signed a new long term agreement with its housing management company, Newark and Sherwood Homes.

This means Newark and Sherwood Homes will continue to manage and maintain the Council’s housing stock of 5,500 properties over a 30 year period to ensure long term stability and investment for council tenants to further improve the services provided to them and the homes they live in now and in the future.

Cllr Roger Blaney, Leader, Newark and Sherwood District Council said: “The decision to extend the agreement for 30 years reflects our satisfaction with Newark and Sherwood Homes as the deliverer of housing services. It gives the Council and Newark and Sherwood Homes the stability for the long term to invest even further in improving services and homes in the best interests of our tenants now and in the future.”

Ginette Hughes, Chair of Newark and Sherwood Homes, said: “The 30 year agreement means we can make long term plans to continue to improve homes and communities for local people. As its chosen housing partner, we are also looking forward to working with the Council to deliver new homes, which will help to reduce the housing waiting list.”

The Council established Newark and Sherwood Homes in 2004, after extensive consultation with tenants. This allowed the Council to access significant investment to bring its housing up to a decent homes standard, which included fitting over 3,000 new kitchens and around 2,100 new bathrooms. This standard was achieved in tenants’ homes by Newark and Sherwood Homes on time and within budget.

Wider community benefits and estate improvements have also been delivered across the district and the partnership between the Council and Newark & Sherwood Homes saw the successful development of 52 new council homes for the first time in 30 years.

In then looking at the future options for the management and maintenance of the Council’s housing stock it was decided that the Council would continue and develop its arrangements with Newark and Sherwood Homes as it has performed well and offered good value for money, delivering tenant satisfaction.

The length of the new agreement, coupled with changes to housing finance, means that the Council in partnership with Newark and Sherwood Homes can prepare plans that provide the best opportunity for innovation, growth and efficiency to benefits tenants and the communities they live in. This will allow the Council and Newark and Sherwood Homes to work together to meet the housing needs of local people and in the future provide new Council homes.
